The Giving Tree, a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein, has been a classic favorite for generations.

Since it was first published fifty years ago, Shel Silverstein's poignant picture book for readers of all ages has offered a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return.

"Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy."

So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein.

Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave.

This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return.

You will love it or hate it

This is a classic story from 1960s of kindness, generosity and friendship. It’s a simple, but beautifully written story, which my kids ask for it over and over again. The narrative with black and white line drawings tugs at the heartstrings. There was once an apple tree, and she loved a little boy – he would come to her to eat her fruit and swing from her branches. The selfless tree shares kindness and gifts with a boy as he grows old, generously, and gives until she has nothing more to give. It’s a parable of unconditional love. For me, it also speaks to the consequences of when we fail to mutually care for one another, or take a friend for granted, despite our best intentions. I know this is a controversial book – and many hate it. I read it as a child and loved it, and I'm glad to share it with my kids. Not all children's stories need to have fancy pictures and be modernised!

Lovely book

Love the meaning behind this book. The pictures are cute and my 3 year old was engaged throughout the story. Not sure if he really understood the meaning but i’m sure we will revisit when he is older.
