Must-have for all babies and the cheeky toddler.

This is a big hit with young ones in our Mandarin playdates. Busy toddlers were all drawn to the beautiful illustrations, scenes of animals escaping from their cages under the moonlight. Full of suspense and humor enjoyed even by babbling babes.

Good night, Gorilla. Good night, Elephant.
It's bedtime at the zoo, and all the animals are going to sleep. Or are they? Who's that short, furry guy with the key in his hand and the mischievous grin?
Good night, Giraffe. Good night, Hyena.
Sneak along behind the zookeeper's back, and see who gets the last laugh in this riotous good-night romp.

Fun Fact: Peggy Rathmann is both the author and illustrator of this book, Goodnight Gorilla. Her real name is Margaret Crosby Rathmann.

Conversation starters:

Math – Count the number of keys that the gorilla has. Is it the same as the number of animals, their cages, and voices saying goodnight?
Which animals walk on two feet, which animals walk on four?
Notice the number of silhouttes at the zookeeper’s neighbour’s window across the pages!

Art – Join the zookeeper as he bids goodnight to his animals, only to have the gorilla taking his keys and unlocking every cage along the way. An endearing story for kids of all ages, with captivating and humourous illustration. Observant children will have extra fun searching for all the hidden stories within!

Science – Notice the colours of the sky in the book. Discuss how the sky looks different at different times of the day. 看看,天空是什么颜色

In the darkness, faraway objects like trees appear as dark silhouettes. Do they look this way during the day? 天暗暗的,在远处的事物,怎么只看得到轮廓?白天也是只看到轮廓吗?
Look at the shadows of the animals and trees in the illustrations. Can we make shadows too? 为什么会有影子呢? 我们也能做出影子吗?
When all the lights are turned off at night, can you see anything? 在夜晚把灯关上,能见到什么呢?
Hunt for the pink balloon! Have you wondered why the size changes? 找一找粉红色的气球!它怎么越来越小了呢?

Science - Zoology - Talk with your child about the various animals in the book. What are the animals’ favorite food and things? Look for clues inside the cages. Does your child like similar things?
Look at what the mouse is doing in the first page. What does it useto bite the balloon string? Why does it do that?

Cute story for young ones

Bought as I had read the English version to my friend's children (6yo and 4yo). My 1yo doesn't appreciate the storyline of the mischievous gorilla yet, but she loves pointing to the different animals and trying to identify them. I can sense there will be good mileage out of this one. Also easy to "read" in English if you want to make it bilingual on the fly, since this is an almost wordless book.

Happy to know that your little one enjoys looking at the various animals! There's other stuff to slowly explore, like the colours of the keys and cages, spot the balloon, banana, and the number of silhouettes at the zookeeper's neighbour's window! Have fun (:

Fun bedtime story

My 1.5 year old loves this book! Now that she’s into naming animals/ objects, the humorous and detailed illustrations give her the opportunity to name the different animals and to point out parts that she notices (eg the zookeeper’s wife taking off her shoes/ the look of shock in the dark/ banana that the mouse brings around haha).

Like it as much as the English version

I bought this as my child has the English version and loves both versions! Wanted to show my child that both languages are fun.

This is such a great idea, L, to have both English and Mandarin versions!
