Just before dawn, it is a picture of complete stillness and peace. It is cold and wet. Next to the lake, below a tree, an old man and his grandson lay asleep on a mat. Faraway, the dark mountains seem to offer protection. There is not one movement all around. And then suddenly, a sliver of light appears at the horizon. The lake waters rise, the mist lifts. The bats are here, the frogs are here, the birds are here. It is the break of dawn. The old man wakes his grandson, draws water from the kae, starts a fire, and prepares breakfast. He then keeps his mat, brings his boat down to the shore, gently rows to the middle of the lake. We hear the sounds of the oars, the rushing of the waters. The mountains and water turn a beautiful jade green.
An exceptional book that gently reveals the beauty of the break of dawn, something that occurs each day but may not be well appreciated.
