Johnny is different.
He is never exactly on time,
he can't seem to stick to a routine and he often speaks in cryptic idioms.
Johnny is neurotypical,
but that's OK.
(Note: NT is short for neurotypical
- a term to describe people who do not have autism
or other neurologically atypical patterns of thought of behaviour)
A picture book with a difference, Why Johnny Doesn't Flap
turns the tables on common depictions of neurological difference
by revealing how people who are not on the autistic spectrum
are perceived by those who are.
The autistic narrator's bafflement at his neurotypical friend's quirks
shows that 'normal' is simply a matter of perspective.
We love this book because it reminds us that we are all individuals,
with valid thoughts, emotions, concerns and perspectives,
worthy of respect and gentleness!
It is a breath of fresh air
to see things from a different angle.

This is a very well written and sensitive book. It's on neurodivergents but written from their perspective (as opposed to usual books that are written by NTs perceiving NVs). I found the twist refreshing. It's better for Older kids, maybe 7-9yo.
