#好书介绍 中国基因 DNA of Chinese Culture (Set of 7) - 《陀螺》 Top

Come and soak in the intricacies of Chinese culture,

wrapped in touching tales of familial love!

I highly recommend this series for bilingual parents

who are not only keen in supporting their kids' language acquisition,

but also want to nurture their kids' deep love of the Chinese culture.

These books

artfully weaves in food, drink and play

into introduction of our beautiful culture,

in really unique illustration styles!

Loved by our friends @sgmontessori too ❤️

Today I'd like to shine the spotlight on 《陀螺》.

My boys call this book

"会让妈妈哭的书“ haha!

The story is about

a little boy named 小羽

who learns how to craft a Chinese top,

from his beloved grandpa who makes different types of toys!

Along with time,

we see that Grandpa starts to forget things,

and can no longer be safely left alone in his workshop.

We infer that he has Alzheimer's Disease.

Will he recognise 小羽 when he returns from overseas studies?

We talked about how Alzheimer's Disease

progressively ravages the lives of people in old age,

how their memory fades away over time,

and slowly they may lose their ability to protect and care for themselves.

I shared with my kids stories

of my experiences of caring for patients with Alzheimer's Disease,

and supporting their caregivers,

when I was working as a nurse in the public hospital years ago.

The interesting fact is that many times people with Alzheimer's disease

cannot remember recent events,

forget their family and friends,

forget their way home,

but their long-term memory can be relatively intact.

This explains why Grandpa in this book

could still remember how to make his toys

and write them down in a book,

so that he could pass it on to 小羽 if he ever comes back.

Love the imagery used -

changing of seasons and falling leaves

represent the changes occurring in Grandpa's lives

and the loss of memories,

and by extension, possibly even the loss of independence and dignity.

Toddler loves to spot the cat while we read!

There are 6 other stories in the set have similar depth and

introduce us to the world of Chinese culture through family ties.
