Posting this to remember

a slow and drizzly weekday morning

with 2.5 year old 妹妹

and her adorable 童音 ✨

We were watching boats

bob up and down with the waves

at West Coast Park

when she burst into song!

In no time, she’ll grow up, just like her older brothers,

and these days will be just a memory.

Sharing a song that is very special to me,

one that I sing often to my kids!

lán lán de tiān kōng yín hé lǐ

yǒu zhǐ xiǎo bái chuán

chuán shàng yǒu kē guì huā shù

bái tù zài yóu wán

jiǎng er jiǎng er kàn bú jiàn

chuán shàng yě méi fān

piāo ya piāo ya piāo xiàng xī tiān

This is a really interesting song that originated from Korea, written and composed by 尹克荣 in 1924, called 《半月》. 尹克荣’s brother-in-law passed away in Sept 1924, and he often saw his sister longingly looking at the moon. The song depicts the loss of a loved one and is also a metaphor for the pain of losing their country, as Korea was under Japanese occupation then.

It was later translated to Mandarin in 1950, with the lyrics meant to inspire little ones to imagine and explore.

I hope my kids will remember

the times we sing and shared together!
