This is a special story
that will stay in my heart for a long time!
Kaka’s parents are deaf and mute.
She wonders why her parents can’t talk to her and call her name,
just like her friends’ parents do.
Over time, she gets increasingly bitter,
and on her birthday, smashes her cake and
doesn’t want the gifts that her parents prepared.
Kaka wants them to stop using their hands to gesture,
and says she hates their fingers.
Her parents are heartbroken and
grandma embraces a sobbing Kaka.
Papa then pens a letter to tell Kaka
that their they lost their ability to speak and listen at a young age,
and that they love her.
This led to lots of discussions and learning -
💬 why people become deaf and mute,
💬 how can we communicate if we don’t use words?
We tried to communicate silently, but it didn’t last long 😜
💬 In life, there are many things that we cannot control,
and many things that others cannot control.
We just have to make the most of it!
💡 Learned some sign language through this book

💡 learned some basic greetings and
the alphabet in our local sign language through Youtube videos.
This led to an impromptu
and zero-prep mini-exploration
about fingers 手指 shǒu zhǐ
We
🖐 took turns using our fingers to make animal shadows,
🖐 learned childhood games using our fingers
that I played with my siblings and friends many years ago, and
🖐 talked about the various things we can do with our hands
like turning the doorknob, playing the piano, and more.
🖐 we discussed what are the 提手旁 words we know,
抱，拉，打，找，拍
what the radical means in our radical book - things related to hands,
many of them are actions we can do with our hands!
🖐 discussed why fingernails are important
- fingernails are hard, made of keratin
and they help us pick things up, open things, and scratch!
