This is a true story from Africa, about an environmentalist and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai!
I love sharing biographies with my kids, for kids of today need real heroes to learn from.
Wangari grew up in Kenya, Africa, and she remembers being surrounded by trees. Many years later when she returns to her homeland, she is devastated to see that entire forests are being destroyed. She decides that she can make a difference and begins planting seedlings in her own home. Even when was put into jail by the authorities for obstructing their plans for development, she inspired many other women to continue planting. This gave rise to the Green Belt Movement, an indigenous grassroots organization in Kenya that empowers women through the planting of trees.
Why we love this book:
- Biography of an inspiring person!
- Inspires us to start small and dream big. We can all make a difference.
- Helps us be more mindful of how our actions can impact the environment
