电器大冒险 Appliance Adventures (Set of 5)

Five household appliances ask for a holiday, cause some chaos then stand up to a bully! This is a light-hearted, warm yet imaginative series for kids moving from picture books to chapter books.

Set includes:

• 暖炉放寒假 Heater's Winter Vacation
• 吸尘器去钓鱼 Vacuum Cleaner Goes Fishing
• 冰箱放暑假 Refrigerator's Summer Vacation
• 电饭锅参加运动会 Rice Cooker Joins in on Sports Day
• 书包去远足 Backpack's Goes Hiking

Why we recommend this set:

• Hilarious and imaginative stories that are uniquely Japanese! At first when we read the books, it felt a little out-of-this-world to have a refrigerator grow hands and feet, want to go on a vacation, and even go swimming, and asks for a swimsuit!? But I have to say the stories grew on us!
• Light-hearted and enjoyable read - It was really nice to be able to immerse ourselves in a light-hearted plot just for fun, and giggle at the silly details! We really marvel at the Japanese author’s imagination.
• Portrays Kenichi’s family as kind, tolerant of unexpected happenings and having affection for each other - things I really want to encourage in our family (:
• Each story follows the same arc: an appliance breaks down, comes to life, asks to go somewhere, causes mayhem, then saves the day when a bully turns up. It then ends with the family cherishing the object, and the object returns to its daily routine. That predictability is a gift for second-language readers. Once your child cracks the pattern in one book, the others feel much more familiar!

Conversation starters

• If one thing in our house came alive tomorrow, which one would it be, and where would it want to go? What would it complain about us? 😅
• Is there something in our home we've had for a really long time? What has it seen?

Note:
The illustrations may not be the most delightful ones around but give it a chance! It can be endearing in its own way (:
