I believe strongly that Mandarin must be meaningful before our kids will want to use it in daily life. Having this awesome resource to talk about how words have evolved to what we read and write today, is very precious to me.

I can see it having lots of mileage. Good for my 4 and 6 year old boys who are starting to be interested in Chinese characters (finally!), or even earlier for exposure! Useful for primary school years to adulthood, to deepen our appreciation of our Chinese culture and heritage.

Love the flaps!

I have been looking for a book about Chinese characters like this and was very excited to find one with flaps! The many flaps and illustrations in this book make learning the history of the Chinese language and characters compelling, but it would have been helpful if the book had han yu pin ying (too advanced for my eldest, who’s 8, and a Chinese noob like me 😅). My younger ones (5 and 3) enjoyed flipping through the book and opening the flaps though, and at least we could see the pictorial evolution of Chinese words which was very enlightening :)

Great book of you love history of chinese

Bought it for my 6 year old, parts of it are a little hard for her to understand. But still provides some fun for exploring history of chinese characters with the lift-the-flap interactivity. Overall, a good purchase and will work well for older kids.

Making Mandarin come alive today

We refer to this book almost every other day especially when M (4yo) learns a new word in school. We realise it makes her appreciate the language so much more. Plus the depth and interactiveness makes it a learning adventure for our whole family, not just the kids!
