This book managed to capture the interest of my 5yo+ child, who is still allergic to Chinese. The illustrations are wonderful and a great talking point to help illustrate the story of the zodiac cycle and how it was created. The little commentaries from the characters as the story unfolds are great points to "casually" insert some Chinese in too, through humour. Will make a great gift for any child.
I was afraid that the story would be too long and complicated for my 3yo but it turned out to be a hit. He patiently sits through it and especially enjoys the last page which is a table of birth years and their respective animal horoscopes, where he would point out the horoscopes of all our family members. My parents in law enjoy reading to him this traditional story as well. It’s well-written and engaging.
Thank you D for your lovely review. So encouraged to know that this book is enjoyed by 3 different generations! What fun to point out the different zodiac animals and how they correspond to various family members' birth years! How precious to connect in this way (:
Both my 2+ year old and 5+ year old child enjoyed the book. They enjoyed the story, loved going through it to look at the different animals repeatedly, and asking us the zodiac of each family member. Would recommend to get it!
It's a great book to introduce the 12 zodiac animals to my child
My 3.5 year old girl and I loved the cute storyline about how the 12 animals compete in a water race to get their ranking in the chinese zodiac. Funny and fictitious origins on how the rooster started with 4 but broke 2 legs when climbing on shore, how monkey got a red butt, how best of friends cat & mouse became sworn enemies, etc. Also gave me chance to share with my girl on values like integrity, sportsmanship and teamwork.
Wow! I love how you shared values of integrity, sportsmanship and teamwork through this classic tale, ha-pppieday! These conversations are so precious. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review (:
