If you have a child who loves to draw, this bookset is for you! Introduce your child to the amazing world of drawing with these simple-to-follow guides.
My heart is still fuzzy, thinking back on our family's recent memories
- Ms 4 asking "妈妈,我们可以一起画画吗?" while clutching the book to her chest with puppy eyes, to which I almost always say yes!
- Mr 9 and Ms 4 enjoying doodling together on the same page at the same time (nurturing sibling bonds and closeness!)
- Discovering interesting facts together - after learning about sheep having rectangular pupils, we watched some videos on Youtube to check if it's real!
- Our joint drawing sessions over the past few weeks, just enjoying each other's presence in SILENCE while doodling and coloring!
- Ms 4 feeling really proud of her drawings, and asking me to take photos to show her papa and grandma
- Me encouraging them in Mandarin (about their progress and effort, choice of colors and lines, variations they make, how I love to spend time with them etc) to build them up, and their eyes looking back at me, sparkling, knowing that they are loved
Kids can learn to
- Observe things
- Analyse things
- Understand things
through this bookset!
Features we love:
-
English, Chinese and pinyin for name of item drawn
(not for instructions though) - Each drawing is broken down into simple steps in Mandarin - a great way for parents to provide meaningful Mandarin conversations with kids
- Visual instructions are clear - easy for kids of all skills levels to follow along, so young learners can quickly learn to draw cute animals, plants, people etc, even if they can't read the instructions
- Great time-buster and conversation starter, keeps kids entertained!
-
Practice space dedicated for doodling - what makes this set really stellar, is that this space always include a context for drawing, for example:
- Draw vegetables like brinjal etc in a basket
- "Plant" carrots in the field, next to a rabbit
- Draw cacti that can be found in the desert
- Draw sheep in a pen
- Draw swallows near their nest
- Think and draw what koalas do on eucalyptus trees
- Draw crabs that have burrowed into the sand
- Each book contains
- Contents page - to easily locate a specific drawing
- Breakdown of the structure of the book
- Tips for kids to use the book
- Tips for parents to use the book (I love this section too!)
- Guide on how to correctly hold a pencil
- Practices for basic lines and shapes
- Pages are big at A4 size and in landscape orientation - with lots of white space for kids to doodle on! There were several times when my younger two kids (ages 4 and 9) were drawing on the same page, at the same time (:
- Coloring fun - After drawing, kids can choose to color their doodles, nurturing their creative expression and working on those fine motor skills that will be very helpful for writing!
- Contains interesting facts that we can learn (I really really love this feature!)
Koalas only eat leaves from eucalyptus tree, and sleeps about 20 hours a day.
Sheep and goats have rectangular pupils in their eyes (we never knew!) unlike humans with circular pupils.
Tulips are very popular. When they were first brought to Holland, a single stalk of tulip could cost as much as a house (we did some research, and found that it wasn't a normal house, but a luxury mansion and more!)
- Makes a lovely gift for families to bond over drawing

We have another drawing set Learning to Draw (Set of 8) with instructions in Mandarin with hanyu pinyin! Super helpful for parents who want to incorporate more Mandarin in daily conversations with our kids.
These books were recommended to me by Linxin and it fully occupied my 3 year old girl on our long trips when we had to settle things at the side or doodling while waiting for food - basically every free time she would try the books and draw/color. They are sprinkled with many random facts of the item and it was interesting to learn about them for me too! Highly recommended
